Who Barney seems to be in Animal Hospital
A white rabbit-like creature β black slit eyes, a mustache, a brown hat, plaid brown pants. He's unfailingly polite, calls the player "friend," and makes a string of small, harmless-sounding requests across five visits: coffee, a briefcase to hold, a photograph, and finally, a place to hide.
The game's own scanner reads him as green β not an anomalyβ the entire time. That's the whole point of him.
What he actually is
The photograph he asks you to take reveals his true form: a wide, sharp-toothed mouth and hollow black eyes. He's confirmed to be both an anomaly and a serial killer β one who eventually incapacitates a police officer with a knife. Tasers and guns do nothing to him.
A "neutral" anomaly that reads clean on every scan is a harder problem than anything else the detection system is built to catch β which is presumably why he got this far in the first place.
Both endings
Hide him
Stay silent when Officer Duckman comes asking (~30 seconds) and he leaves peacefully. Barney rewards you with his briefcase: a second coffee machine, 300-second cooldown.
Turn him in
Duckman tries to arrest him, gets stabbed and knocked out. Barney destroys a CCTV camera and escapes. Duckman later shows up as a patient you have to treat. No reward.
Neither ending changes the shifts that follow. The choice resolves Barney's arc, not the game.
Where Barney sits in the Animal Corp web
Barney has no documented link to the Corporation at all, and that turns out to be the interesting part. Both of the characters with no link are the ones who put a decision in your hands, while everyone connected to Animal Corp carries plot instead. 2 of the 6 profiles here sit outside the conspiracy β and they are the two the game makes you choose about.
The only character doing ordinary work for an ordinary reason. He is not investigating the Corporation β he is looking for one specific criminal.
The briefcase nobody opens
One object shows up three separate times, and it is the same object each time: a black suitcase stamped TOP SECRET in red. It is never opened on screen.
Ron from Accounting carries one β Same black case, same red stamp β on a character whose job has nothing to do with medicine.
Three carriers, no contents. Treat any account of what is inside as invention β the game has not shown it, and neither have we.
What Barney knows, and what they do with it
Sorted by what each of them does with what they have, the cast falls into four positions β and Barney is in the one labelled knows and does not say. Dr. Harlow occupies the same position. The two who withhold are the two you spend the most time with, which is most of why the game feels the way it does.
Yes β a neutral anomaly, meaning the game's own scanner reads him as green (not anomalous) despite his true form being a wide, sharp-toothed mouth with hollow eyes. He's also confirmed to be a serial killer.
What are Barney's two endings?
Hide him from Officer Duckman and he rewards you with a second coffee machine (300-second cooldown). Turn him in and Duckman gets stabbed and knocked out while Barney escapes β no reward either way for the outcome of the choice itself.
